What is the difference between a Social, Workshop, and Laboratory?
Since everyone is interested in different aspects of mail, here are the differences between the events we host:
Socials are informal gatherings that where we get together with typewriters and write letters.
Workshops are focused on teaching you how to do something along a theme.
L.W.A. Laboratory is where we invite you to experiment with us while exploring a specialized aspect of letter writing. Perks are small-groups, individual attention from Kathy & Donovan, focused themes, and take-home treats so you continue tinkering at home
World-wide Event Calendar [link]
Since we can't make it to every city/state/town that our members are in, some of our most amazing members have started hosting their own letter socials. We keep track of all L.W.A. Letter Socials hosted by ourselves and our members on our event calendar. If you are going to host a Letter Social, please let us know and we'll add it to the event calendar.
Letter Writers Alliance
The Letter Writers Alliance is a member based organization dedicated to keeping the art of letter writing alive. The Alliance was started in the Summer of 2007 by Kathy Zadrozny and Donovan Beeson. With a combination of both online presence and in person gatherings we strive to give people the tools to maintain the art of letter writing.
With over 5,000 members worldwide, the member site is the biggest part of the Alliance. We offer free printable downloads, exclusive member products, and vintage postal items. The LWA has been included in the letter writing book, Good Mail Day and has been interviewed by the BBC regarding the importance of paper correspondence. At then end of the day, we are happy to see so many people enthusiastic about letter writing.

The LWA Mission
In this era of instantaneous communication, a handwritten letter is a rare and wondrous item. The Letter Writers Alliance is dedicated to preserving this art form; neither long lines, nor late deliveries, nor increasing postal rates will keep us from our mission.
As a member of the Letter Writers Alliance, you will carry on the glorious cultural tradition of letter writing. You will take advantage of every opportunity to send tangible correspondence. Prepare your pen and paper, moisten your tongue, and get ready to write more letters!

If you forgot your password email us at 16sparrows (at) gmail (dot) com and we'll help you out. You can replace a lost member card here (login needed). If you remember your member #, write that in the message to vendor when checking out and we will assign you the original #, otherwise we will reassign you a member #.
Who makes the L.W.A.?
Don't you see the irony of having a letter
writing group online?
It is quite an interesting twist - we use technology to enable an analog activity. The website is more of a meeting point and resource to enable more letter writing. The LWA was created in order to unite letter writers; we use the member site as our "club house," if you will. The free downloads and pen pal swap are resources to get members offline and outside with their pen and paper.
So are you anti-technology/email?
Absolutely not. We aren't anti-email, we are just pro real mail. We use technology to connect letter writers as well as to find letter writing inspiration. We love the stuff we can create on our computers and the quick connections we can make with email. We also know that letters are an important part of human communication and are a great way to maintain connections between friends and strangers.
Do you accept donations?
Yes we do. Our Letter Writing Socials are free events and we always supply free stationery and envelopes. Your donation will help us continue doing this and spread the letter writing love.
How is my order shipped?
All orders are shipped through the US Postal Service. If you only order an L.W.A. membership, your welcome parcel will not have tracking information. We ship L.W.A. Memberships, cards, and stationery through First Class Mail. All other items are shipped via Priority Mail or Global Priority Mail.
Your items should get into your happy little hands within a week or two. International customers should expect their orders within 3 to 4 weeks.
All major credit cards and e-checks are accepted through pay pal, a safe & secure way to make credit card payments online. Please note that you don't need to create a Pay pal account to use the pay pal shopping cart service, just click on the "if you do not currently have a pay pal account click here" box in the middle of the pay pal prompt page once you've checked out and they'll take your credit card information for us.
If you are planning on purchasing a large amount of a specific item you may be eligible for price breaks and discounts. Please contact us for more information.
We try our best to describe the products as accurately as possible and strive to make each item perfect. We want you to be 100% happy, so if you are not pleased with your items you can return them for a refund if they are eligible.
If you feel that an item was grossly misrepresented you can return it. Personalized items and customs orders cannot be returned or refunded. To return an item please email us first and let us know the problem with the item and to receive authorization. If you do not receive prior authorization, you will not be eligible for a refund.
After receiving authorization,
ship the item back to us within 7 days of the delivery confirmation
order. Items must be shipped via method comparable to USPS
Mail with Delivery Confirmation. We are not responsible for
items damaged or lost during the shipment process. Any returned
must be unused and in resale mint condition for a full
refund. Shipping charges are not refundable.
All information gathered during any online transaction will be used solely to process your order. When you sign up on our email list, rest assured that your information will not be distributed or sold to anyone, for any reason. In short: we will not do anything evil with your info.
I am sorry to say, but we have to charge sales tax to residents of Illinois, since the studio resides in that fine state.
Is it safe to use my credit card online?
Yes. Purchase transactions are fully encrypted in SSL to completely protect all of the information you provide. When on a secure web page, you should see the security icon on your browser's status bar light up and lock. If you are not comfortable with ordering on-line please contact us for other options.
We started 16 Sparrows in 2004 and consider it the mothership to the L.W.A., with the Alliance serving a very specific group of enthusiastic paper nerds. (Namely, nerds like us.) 16 Sparrows is focused more on snarky cards and paper goods, while the L.W.A. is focused more on letters, pushing the boundaries of mail, and creativity.
After hearing too many people tell us they were the only ones who wrote letters anymore, we were inspired to create something to link all these isolated epistle enthusiasts together. In the Summer of 2007 the Letter Writers Alliance was born as a member based organization dedicated to keeping the art of letter writing alive.
